Nollywood upcoming actor talks about her experience with auditions in Nollywood, the good, the bad and well…

When did you decide you would take acting as a full time career?

Well, that was late 2016, I quit my office job (that I took to pacify my family and to prove to myself it really wasn’t for me) and I decided this acting thing o, I’m gonna do it and do it well.

Interesting! How did that go with your family?

To be honest, I’d say I have the most understanding family, we’ve got several people in the arts in my extended family, so it wasn’t that big a deal. They just needed me to be 100% sure that it was what I really loved and wanted to dedicate my whole life to and when I came to the realization working that office job and told them, they accepted and have been supportive throughout. Couldn’t have asked for better.

That’s awesome, not many people have that. Many people say the audition process is too long, stressful and just doesn’t work for them, is that the same for you?

No, it really isn’t. I knew that auditions would have to be the way to get into the industry, because I didn’t have anyone in the industry that could put me in their films or anything. I had to hustle the auditions o and let me tell you, it has really worked for me. I mean I have friends that hate auditions because they hardly got jobs, I guess I was favored or it was just really my thing. I got jobs from auditions and then referrals from the people I’d worked with from auditions. So, I’ll say auditions have always worked for me. I got a cinema job from an open audition, same with an Africa magic original series.

So, tell me how your first audition went, that is if you remember it.

Honestly, I do not remember my first audition. But I do remember one of the early ones I went for. (Starts to laugh a little) this experience ehn, it will always remain with me.

So, I saw this audition notice online somehow, I do not really remember how, but the location was really close to my home then, just a bike away. I decided this was it, how I’d start this acting journey you know, go there and wow them and get that lead role. Totally turned out to be a what I expected vs what I got.

Please tell me what you got o?

Hmmmm, that’s how I got to the place o, somewhere inside inside aguda Surulere sha and the hotel used wasn’t even nice, that should have been the first pointer for me, but I forged on because I have destiny to fulfill you know. So, I waited for the audition, it got to my turn and I went in, the normal audition bants na, introduced myself and then did a monologue and apparently they loved it and loved me and I was elated! In my mind this is it o, let’s go there na. They took my details and on the list I saw that I was just between the 5th-8th person that had put down my details, that even made me more sure of myself. Anyways they said they’d call once they were set. I was happy and I took my leave.

Oh well, that sounds like a good audition to me though, so what was wrong with it?

It’s about to get interesting, trust me. So, I got home and I was just chilling on my balcony when I got a call from the director saying I needed to come meet him at his office for another job that he would be producing and directing. Apparently, he said I got the hob for that one but I also was perfect for his. I was super excited, 2 jobs from one audition? I almost freaked out. Anyway, I took a bike to the ‘office’ (also very close to my home then) and I realized it wasn’t an office after all but a face me I slap you block of flats. You know those types that are 10 small rooms with 1 tiny thing that passes for a toilet/bathroom and another tiny spot that is a ‘kitchenette’. I almost died! This was it? His office? I called him to let him know I think I had the wrong address, but I was where he told me to be. He asked me to wait and he stepped outside, I almost died again!

I’m confused, he asked you to his house pretending it was his office?

Yes o, I couldn’t believe it. But you see mumu me then, wanting to start out, I gave him the benefit of the doubt. I went in with him, he showed me the script for his movie titled ‘NYMPHO’ you know, short for Nymphomaniac. Another almost dying moment. I read it and the first thing I saw was the character I was to play is giving head to the gateman!

Excuse me?!!

Oh you heard me, the character went on to have sex with at least 5 other men and a lady I think and there was soooo much nudity in it and actual fellatio in it. So, I asked him how he intended to work around all of the nudity and sex scenes, uncu told me that he is a realist and only shoots films where the real thing is happening.

So he wanted you to go nude and give fellatio on screen?

Exactly what he wanted, I told him I wasn’t interested. Nudity wasn’t and still isn’t my thing, I told him that and he actually asked me how I intended to make it in the industry (laughs) so I legit have to go naked to make it in this industry? That’s what this person was telling me. I asked to leave and he said he had to show me a movie he shot recently and the next thing he played the love scene and all I saw was just nakedness. I let him know it was cool he had the people that were down for that but I wasn’t.

Wow! What happened next though? I hope it didn’t become anything serious?

I swear to you, till this day I believe God just saved me because it could have easily gone south. Anyways, after watching the scene I told him I still wasn’t interested and he had another proposal for me. He said when we’d be shooting the job I got from the audition, that I should be staying with him and going to set from his place and all, which really meant be my sex partner for the period of the shoot. I just got up and told him NO! He finally got that I wasn’t interested and let me go.

That’s something. That must have been the worst thing you’ve experienced right?

I wish! I actually really wish!

You’ve experienced more of this?

Is it the producer that told me he’ll be pumping me out from his movies to the big big men that actually makes us all celebrities by giving us money? Or the one that was wanking while he asked me to dance for a character?

Or the one that said I should show him how I’d seduce him if I was acting with him and he wanted to lock his office door? I’ve experienced quite a lot actually and I’m grateful to God I didn’t fall for any or get forced into doing what I didn’t want.

Phew. It feels good letting this all out. Thank you.

  1. A lot Nollywood directors, even wannabe directors and producers thread on this path. I’m sure some of these ladies paid the price and still had to fan the lead character, the Princess in the movie after several rounds and baba must have used Burantashi. 😁
